SEO = Search Engine Optimization.
It’s how and where you show up on Google.
Read on to learn the four basic principles of SEO marketing that will help drive traffic to your website and allow you to rank higher on Goole.
Before we start, you need to know that ranking higher on Google is a long game – there’s no quick fix, and there are many factors that go into your website’s SEO. But persistence pays off, and it’s 100% worthwhile of your time.
The 4 SEO Basics for How to Rank Higher on Google
How Technical SEO Helps You Rank Higher on Google
Technical SEO refers to all of the behind-the-scenes stuff. A good example is ensuring your website is optimized, i.e., it works well when someone views it on a mobile device. Fun Fact: Globally, 68.1% of all website visits in 2020 came from mobile devices.
So you need to make your website look as appealing on smaller mobile screens as it does on a desktop.
As well as making sure your website looks good, it needs to load quickly, so your users don’t leave your site when they become frustrated. A simple way to do this is by making your image sizes smaller but still good quality.
Finally, you mustn’t have duplicated content throughout your site, e.g., identical copy on different pages. Google wants to provide quality search results for its users. As such, it recognizes when a website’s content isn’t to a high standard – this includes laziness when copying and pasting the exact words on different areas of your site.
How On-Page SEO Helps You Rank Higher on Google
On-page SEO is how the content on your website reads to Google’s search algorithm.
For example, I just mentioned that Google wants to provide high-quality search results to its users, so to do that, it needs to be able to ‘read’ your website for the answers that people are looking for.
So how do you know what your audience is typing into the Google search bar? I recommend two ways of finding out:
Think like your customer – What are their biggest pain points? What are some of their most frequently asked questions? How would you answer these? E.g. If you’re an architect based in Melbourne, it’s your audience will likely Google, “How much does an architect cost in Melbourne?” or “Highly rated architects in Melbourne.” Both of these questions address likely search terms.
Use answerthepublic.com – This website is a goldmine of ideas and focus.
Once you’ve done your research to understand what keywords your audience is searching for, incorporate them throughout your website. You can do this on your various web pages and regularly updated content in a blog. Including these search terms within page titles are VERY EFFECTIVE in helping your business rank properly on Google.
How Off-Page SEO Helps You Rank Higher on Google
Off-page SEO refers to links from other websites to your website.
Let’s caveat that – the number of QUALITY links from other websites to your website. Off-page linking is also known as backlinking. If someone links to your site from their site, this is a backlink.
Here are some examples:
Links from social media profiles and posts to your website and content
Guest blog on someone else’s website and link back to your site
Have a presence on review sites by leaving comments or reviews, with links back to your site
When you raise awareness that your brand or business exists, Google takes note too.
How Quality Content Helps You Rank Higher on Google
This one might seem obvious, but it’s often overlooked.
You must make your website enjoyable for those who visit.
All of the above SEO tactics must be delivered in a way that makes your audience WANT to be on your website.
If you entice your audience to spend more time on your site, Google recognizes that you have valuable content that’s worth ranking you higher on – and it’s right.
Again, Google wants to provide a good service to its users. By recognizing that your website does, in fact, have valuable content and information throughout its pages, it’ll want to recommend you to those searching for your topic.
